How to Check a Product Before It Is Shipped

Steps for buying equipment or goods from another city without sending money blind.

Product Verification   5 min read · Updated 8 October 2026

Buying from another city is common and often safe. It becomes risky when the item is expensive, the seller is new to you and the only proof is pictures. Here is a way to reduce the risk.

Write down exactly what you are buying

  • Item name, brand and model
  • Serial number or identification number where applicable
  • Quantity and condition (new, used, refurbished)
  • Accessories and documents that come with it
  • Price, delivery cost and delivery date

Ask for fresh proof

Ask for a video taken today that shows the item, the serial number and the place. Ask the seller to show the item working if it is a device or machine. Old photos prove nothing.

Have it inspected in person

The strongest protection is an independent person who goes to the seller, compares the item with your list, and sends you photos, video and notes before you pay. This is what a product verification does.

Understand what an inspection can and cannot do

An inspection confirms what can be seen and documented at the time of the visit. It cannot guarantee how the item will perform later or find every hidden fault. Agree the inspection list in advance so the report answers your real concerns.

Handle payment and shipping carefully

  • Pay only after the inspection findings are satisfactory.
  • Use a payment method you can trace.
  • Pack and ship with a record: photos of the packed item and the waybill.
  • Inspect on arrival and report problems the same day.
